Good Friday - The Dust and the Blood

In Luke 22 verse 44 it reads in the Passion Translation, “He (Jesus) prayed more passionately like one being sacrificed.”

This account is describing when Jesus begins to pray with such agony that His sweat turns to blood. It is hard to imagine the enormous agonizing pain that He was enduring. Yet with these drops of blood and sweat the remission of sin had already begun.

We are told that Jesus habitually came to this garden to pray. Although we know exactly what He prayed for on this night of intense pressing, I couldn’t help but think about what else He must have prayed in this very place. Our natural, physical, place of prayer becomes a very special and intimate place of communion. Repeatedly, Jesus came to this place and joined His heart in intimate union with the Father. How many hours of communion had He spent there? There, Jesus heard the Father’s voice. He felt His comfort. He shared His heart and petitions with the Father in this very Garden.

The soil held history. The place became a consecrated place of communion. A place where love was shared by Father, Son, and Spirit. All of those intimate moments; all those little and large surrenders along the way had led Him again to this Garden of communion to be pressed with the ultimate pressing. Now, in this hour, He would experience His greatest surrender. The surrender that would subdue the soul’s will for all eternity. As Jesus prayed for the Father’s perfect will to be completed; dropping on to that soil was His all-powerful, saving, blood. Slowly dripping with souls’ agony and being absorbed into the dust.

There was another garden of communion in the beginning. In that garden Yahweh formed a man out of dust, soil, and molded him. He breathed into him the breath of Life and he became a living soul-the first Adam. Yet that first Adam, made from dust, committed his disobedient act by a tree. As he ate its fruit, he surrendered to his own will, bringing death and condemnation to us all.

It is a striking contrast to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Now, the Last Adam, Jesus, also made in humanity’s image and likeness is kneeling by a tree in the garden. Yet this time, He refuses to take the same path as the First Adam. No fruit to eat. Instead, Jesus surrenders in obedience. A surrender so arduous and agonizing He begins to sweat blood. Those drops of precious holy blood soak into the dust of this Garden declaring that victory is coming to overturn the curse that entered by the man made from dust in the beginning. Saving blood dripping for a will totally surrendered.

Yes, the first battle of the war to overthrow the curse and kingdom of darkness had been won. The final battle was just before Him, on a cross between two thieves. Praise the Lord!! He wins that one too!

While the world is captured by more and more chaos, it is a strategic time when the church of Jesus Christ should be praying more earnestly for the Lord’s return. He is coming….the time of His arrival has been set in the Father’s heart. The time frame may be debated on the earth, but His return is not. Jesus told us that wars and rumors of wars would happen. We should not be surprised or shaken because of them. Peace is the kingdom of God we hold within. Jesus is our Peace.

I want to encourage you to remember to stay centered on these:

The Way

The Sound

The Spirit

The Light

The Way - make your hearts straight, open, before Him. In humility remove all interference that would keep you from intimacy with Him. We are not called to fix or perfect ourselves, however, we are called to make the adjustments Holy Spirit is asking us to. Our obedience to His leading is crucial in making our heart straight and open before Him. Remember, even if you fail, keep trying. Ask for His grace to be poured out upon you and rejoice that new mercies are new today, and every morning.

The Sound - keep your spiritual ears open to hear what the Spirit is saying.
Matthew 4:4 Amplified -
But He replied, It has been written, Man shall not live and be upheld and sustained by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.

Jesus said we “live on every SPEAKING Word from the Father.” He used the term “rhema.” It is important that we hear the sound, the spoken word, that is being released over us. As we “confess” the Rhema He speaks, we are “saying the same as.” I see this as entering in to the same sound. There is power released when we are in agreement with what the Spirit is saying.

The Spirit - cultivate, and keep cultivating communion with Holy Spirit. Fight for your time of intimacy with Him. As we partake daily of the written scriptures, prayer, communion, and even assembling with the body, we are ensuring that we are remaining vitally united with Holy Spirit. Paul writes in Romans 12:2, “surrender yourselves to God to be His sacred, living sacrifices.” (Passion Translation).Because of all that Jesus has done to redeem and restore us back to the Father, there can be no other response but to give all of our lives to Him in total surrender.
John 15:4 (Passion Translation)
So you must remain in life-union with me, for I remain in life-union with you. For as a branch severed from the vine will not bear fruit, so your life will be fruitless unless you live your life intimately joined to mine.

The Light - it is my whole-hearted belief that if we live in “life-union” with Jesus that He will completely, and perfectly, transform us. Transformation means Light! As Jesus was transfigured on the mountain He became a Light-being. So much so, that even His garments returned to their original matter…Light!
Paul tells us in Romans 12:2, “but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think.” That word “transformed” is the same word as transfigured when referring to Jesus on the mount.

If we will fully live “in the way,” with our ears open to hearing “the sound” He is releasing, while remaining in surrender and union with Holy Spirit, we will be transformed into the image of Jesus and become the Light, or we can say, “the glory” of the Lord. What is glory? It is the manifestation of the presence of God!
So in the midst of confusion, chaos, war, terror, etc, what the world needs is Jesus. The reality of Him and His love and His power. And beloved, He is shown through us, His church, His body, His Bride.

John 12:1-7
SO SIX days before the Passover Feast, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had died and whom He had raised from the dead. 2 So they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those at the table with Him. 3 Mary took a pound of ointment of pure liquid nard [a rare perfume] that was very expensive, and she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. And the whole house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. 4 But Judas Iscariot, the one of His disciples who was about to betray Him, said, 5 Why was this perfume not sold for 300 denarii [a year’s wages for an ordinary workman] and that [money] given to the poor (the destitute)? 6 Now he did not say this because he cared for the poor but because he was a thief; and having the bag (the money box, the purse of the Twelve), he took for himself what was put into it [pilfering the collections]. 7 But Jesus said, Let her alone. It was [intended] that she should keep it for the time of My preparation for burial. [She has kept it that she might have it for the time of My embalming.] 8 You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.

Six days before the Passover Feast Jesus arrives in Bethany. He goes to have supper with newly resurrected Lazarus and his family. We read that Mary takes her precious and costly perfume and pours it out upon Jesus. She offers to Him such extravagant worship. This makes me think of how too many times I reserve myself, or hold myself back, from giving Jesus all that I know is in my heart to give. Her brave extravagance pulls at my heart to give more and more of my worship and surrender to Jesus.

As I was meditating upon her act of extravagance I am reminded of some of the reasons why reservation takes hold of our heart of worship:

Concerning Yourself with the Opinions of Others
Mary didn’t concern herself with the other people in the room. She wasn’t allowing what their opinions may or may not be to hinder her. She may have had some inward turmoil about what they all may think of her, I think that is a normal part of our humanity. However, her focus was not on them. No, her focus was intently on the One she was there to worship. Extravagant worship doesn’t allow itself to be bound by the opinions of others.

Concerning Yourself with the Price and not the Prize
I would imagine that Mary may have thought about the price, or the amount, of what she would be sacrificing. Did she have a moment when the thought of the amount of money crossed her mind? When we have in our heart to give Jesus our best we are assailed with the “what ifs” of darkness. She would have to push those menacing thoughts aside and remind herself of the Prize, Jesus. He is worthy of this and more. When we keep our heart and mind centered on Jesus we will not succumb to the doubts of darkness.

Concerning Yourself with Right Moment
Jesus had come to fellowship and have dinner. I wonder if she considered whether or not He would think she was being “out of line.” Perhaps He would tell her this was not the time or place for such an act. These possibilities didn’t matter. He was there, present, and that was all she needed. Extravagant worship just needs Him to be there.

This expensive and rare perfume was reserved as the fragrance of Kings. Sure, it may have been collected by illicit acts of prostitution, but what was in the box was rare and used for those who wore crowns upon their heads. Jesus wore no crown, but she could see the King He really was. She knew that He ruled over a dominion that had power and authority greater than any other. Just ask the seven demons who had been expelled from her. She had experienced firsthand His kingdom. Perhaps this is exactly why she chose that very alabaster box. There was no other King she knew.

Mary found her place on the floor, staring directly at the feet of the one she loved more than money, others’ opinions, and even herself. There was no doubt He was the worthy King. Suddenly, the breaking of the box is heard. Perhaps it interrupts chatter and commotion in the room. Perhaps perplexed glances are darting around the room wondering what that noise was. Suddenly a scent fills the room before their questions can be answered. Thoughts are now pierced by the aroma of Kings. I imagine the room has gone quiet. All that can be heard is the sniffling of an extravagant lover as she wipes His feet and pours out her love.

The next sound to penetrate the room is a voice proclaiming, “What a waste!” Talk about a moment stealer! More importantly this voice is the voice of one who cannot comprehend this type of giving. It is the antithesis of what is happening.

A thief cannot understand this type of extravagant giving.
A betrayer cannot fathom this sacrifice.
A prideful heart cannot comprehend this surrender.

A religious spirit will always criticize the one who gives too much; worships too much; stays too long; loves too hard; sacrifices so much. A religious heart and an extravagant heart will always oppose one another. Yet it was the extravagant one whom Jesus defended. He did not find her offering offensive. Instead He indicates to us all that her act of worship was accomplishing more than any of them could understand. She was preparing the Lamb for His sacrifice.

Mary shows us what it looks like to be an extravagant lover of Jesus. Over and over again she demonstrates to us that Jesus is worthy of our all. Today, as we reflect on the Lamb of God and His sacrifice of laying down His life for us, may we pour out the same extravagant worship.

Freedom for New Beginnings

Psalm 118:5 TPT
Out of my deep anguish and pain I prayed and God, You helped me as a father. You came to my rescue and broke open the way into a beautiful and broad place.

I love how the psalmist is so honest and clear about the conditions of his life and soul. Deep pain. Anguish. Most versions say, “out of my distress.” The Hebrew word for distress is defined as “straits” or “something tight.” The root word is defined as “distress, trouble, affliction, anguish, adversity, vexer, tribulation, tightness.” There is much to be gleaned from all those words. But most importantly you can feel the overwhelming sense of brokenness that was upon his heart.

There comes a point in the “tightening” of problematic circumstances where we begin to really feel the constricting. It’s uncomfortable, but we are pretty secure in our own abilities to handle things, we think, so we endure like a “good soldier.” Or even worse, we have that nasty independent spirit within us that refuses to admit that slow feeling of being overwhelmed. Yet even still, the narrowing doesn’t stop…it gets tighter and tighter…. until.

“Out of my deep anguish and pain…I prayed.”
Finally, we cry out. Not when things get better. Not when all the problems are solved. Not when we have it all figured out. Nope! We cry out in the MIDST of our brokenness, pain, and mess. And Jesus doesn’t turn His head in disapproval. He doesn’t reply with all the reasons why you may be wrong. He doesn’t reject us.
No, instead we see the most beautiful words,
“You helped me as a Father. You came to my rescue.”
With care, love, kindness, and comfort, He helps us. He answers us. He supports us. He heals us. He makes all things NEW! He makes our hearts NEW!

Notice what the psalmist says next, “You…broke open the way into a beautiful broad place.”
Did you catch that? Do you see what happens when we turn and cry out to Jesus? We come from the place of “something tight, distress, trouble, affliction, narrowing” to Jesus leading us to a BROAD place! From narrowing and restricting to broad, large and spacious. Figuratively speaking the psalmist is declaring to us that we become FREE when we, even in our brokenness, cry out to Jesus!!

This is the freedom for a new beginning!! And it’s available for anyone who needs it and wants it! Just cry out!! Jesus will make you new!! And set you in a broad place of freedom.

My Light will also reveal areas, plans, and thoughts, you have considered fruitful, even necessary, but you will see are not. In My Light and revelation, you will rejoice at the removal of these. I only dispose of that which is not beneficial. Trust Me as I carry away what I know is rubble. The rubble of all thoughts and desires that are not in agreement with what I am building and restoring within you. Will you trust Me and allow Me to be the Architect of your life? If you choose to trust Me, then you will be made new in lasting freedom from fears, addictions, lies, torment, and sorrow. Stones of disappointment will not be within your walls.

I have set My eyes upon you for good; and I will build you up and not pull you down. I will give you a heart to know Me, to understand Me, to recognize Me when you set your whole heart before Me. (Jeremiah 24:6) I will build you up, and you will be rebuilt.

I promised in these last days to raise up and rebuild the tabernacle of David, the tabernacle of impassioned love, to close up the gaps between us; to raise up its ruins, to repair all the areas destroyed from war; to reinforce the pieces that are falling apart because they have been neglected and uncared for. I promised to rebuild it as it was in the days of old, in its previous state. As I promised to rebuild that very tabernacle, I have promised to rebuild you. (Amos 9)

My prophetic promise was that with the rebuilding of that tabernacle of Love, everything that was barren and unfruitful would overflow with spiritual blessings and My Spirit Wine. Do you now see what I am declaring to you today? You will overflow with My very Presence! You will be intoxicated with My Holy Spirit as we rebuild, repair, and make NEW! My blessings will continually flow from within your restored heart of love for Me. In the season of rebuilding also comes the recovery of all that was lost and stolen. Yes, you will recover the spiritual blessings prepared and promised to you and to the generations. My store house is overflowing with all that I have recovered for you.

And then, you will go forth in My Name and Spirit to bring restoration to others who are broken and shattered. As you are rebuilt and adorned with My heavenly fruit and gifts you will lead the brokenhearted and captive in sin into the reality of My Light and Life and Love.

Isaiah 61:1-4 TPT
The mighty Spirit of the Lord Yahweh is wrapped around me because Yahweh has anointed me, as a messenger to preach good news to the poor. He sent me to heal the wounds of the brokenhearted, to tell captives, “You are free!” and to tell prisoners, “Be free from your darkness.”
I am sent to announce a new season of Yahweh’s grace and a time of God’s recompense on his enemies, to comfort all who are in sorrow, to strengthen those crushed by despair who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful bouquet in the place of ashes, the oil of bliss instead of tears, and the mantle of joyous praise instead of the spirit of heaviness. Because of this, they will be known as Might Oaks of Righteousness, planted by Yahweh as a living display of his glory. They will restore ruins from long ago and rebuild what was long devastated. They will renew ruined cities and desolations of past generations.

Light. Light changes everything.

Yesterday, my granddaughter was in the garage playing with her uncle’s dog. Next thing I know she is standing in front of me shaking from head to toe crying profusely. Apparently, a breaker had blown, and the lights went out. She was in the pitch-black darkness, terrified. She then could make out a sliver of light around the laundry room door and found her way out. That tiny speck of light made all the difference. It led her out of the darkness.

Likewise, in our lives we find ourselves in periods of unexpected darkness. Depression from an impending divorce. A diagnosis that took us by surprise. The death of a loved one or layoffs at work. These are times of sudden, unexpected darkness.

There are also those times when we are just living in “adjusted darkness.” You know, like when you walk into a darkened room and your eyes slowly adjust so that you can see? Many, many, are living here. Adjusted to the darkness. Living life with no true joy. Going in and out of each day with maddening mundane monotony.

I know for myself this was true. I had lived a life of addiction, depression, pain, fear, and all the rest. Daily in the dark. Until one glorious day…LIGHT appeared!! And when you see it, right where you are living, hurting, working, it changes everything. And that point is where I want to stay for a moment -
The Light that comes right where you are.

In the account of Jesus’ birth, we read in Luke chapter 2 that there were shepherds out in the field tending to their flocks. These were ordinary men who were working, living, doing life like you and me. They had probably walked far that day and then, as always, the sun had finally set. The sky grew dark, and night had come. They had settled into the surrounding, expected, darkness. Then suddenly, everything changed. Light appeared. An angel stood right in the middle of their camp. With the sudden, unexpected Light came the reality of a spiritual realm. This Light piercing the darkness of their earth, and their hearts, gave way to a Truth, THE Truth. That truth is that a realm in heaven must exist and that at any given moment, it can become very apparent. And if there was any shadow of a doubt within their hearts with the appearance and message of one angel, a host, an army, of angels are then made known, and heaven and earth had become one.

The Light appearing to the shepherds did more than change their evening, it changed their lives. It dispelled the darkness, changed their plans, redirected their path, put praise upon their lips, and forever altered their hearts. The Light in the darkness of that field, led them directly to Jesus. The Light led them to Life. And today, it is the same.

Whether you are you experiencing an unexpected darkness, or living in the adjusted darkness of your life, Jesus wants you to know that He is with you. There is a realm that is greater than just what you are experiencing, and it can shine bright in your darkness. It can lead you out.

There are times when Light comes bursting through our darkness when we don’t expect it, like with the shepherds, and then there are times when we have to cry out to see it. Whether or not you are aware of it, He is already there with you. That realm you can’t see exists right where you are. Personally, for me, I couldn’t see it. At the end of June 1994 while I was consumed in the darkest dark I had ever known, I cried out. “God, if you are real, please show me.” That was it. Days later I was arrested with the same amazement as those in Luke 2, I was captured by that Light. And like them, my plans changed, my direction was altered, and my heart was reborn.

Christmas is when we celebrate the coming of Jesus, the Light and Life. If you have come into the reality of His Light and Love, stop and take some time to thank Him and worship and adore Him. Perhaps there is some darkness that has invaded your life and heart. It is time to stop adjusting to it, and with His Light, cause it to flee.

But if instead you are still searching for Him this Christmas, searching for a way out of your darkness and pain, I pray that the reality of His Light and Love will fill your heart and forever alter your course.

With humbled amazement, Merry Christmas.
Pastor Annette

Luke 2:8-14 AMP
And in that vicinity there were shepherds living [out under the open sky] in the field, watching [in shifts] over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord flashed and shone all about them, and they were terribly frightened. 10 But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people. 11 For to you is born this day in the town of David a Savior, Who is Christ (the Messiah) the Lord! 12 And this will be a sign for you [by which you will recognize Him]: you will find [after searching] a Baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger. 13 Then suddenly there appeared with the angel an army of the troops of heaven (a heavenly knighthood), praising God and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest [heaven], and on earth peace among men with whom He is well pleased [men of goodwill, of His favor].

Prophetic Word from Prophet Cheryl Ballard
August 2015

This is a healthy house.

Jesus is stepping into YOU with a greater authority, power and anointing…let heaven come, through you.

We are in a time of an Eliakiam shift (his name means God arising, and God awakening)
Elakiam had a unique mantle – the heart of a shepherd with a mantle of mentoring with an awakening for transformation – building sons, sons coming up because of the shepherding heart

Isaiah 22:20-22
20 And in that day I will call My servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah. 21 And I will clothe him with your robe and will bind your girdle on him and will commit your authority to his hand; he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. 22 And the key of the house of David I will lay upon his shoulder; he shall open and no one shall shut, he shall shut and no one shall open. 23 And I will fasten him like a peg or nail in a firm place; and he will become a throne of honor and glory to his father's house. 24 And they will hang on him the honor and the whole weight of [responsibility for] his father's house: the offspring and issue [of the family, high and low], every small vessel, from the cups even to all the flasks and big bulging bottles.

The key has authority we are being given:
1. Governmental prayer/land/territory shifts and confronts systems of idolatry
2. Restoration of worship
3. Causes power based shifts

He said, you are to begin to look for God’s provision in dynamic and astounding ways.

You are no longer held in the place of warring with the enemy in a constant battle, but will now walk in an authority that will eradicate the giants in the land, personal and territorial

Get ready for confrontation – shifting of the government power in the land an appropriating of Christs victory and authority individually and collectively is the power you walk in

An overcoming mantle is coming upon you – the day of suddenly being upon you.

He is literally changing the robes of authority from those who have reigned in wickedness to those who will reign in righteousness. Be on the right side of those robes

The Lord says He is manifold in purpose – he is speaking to us authority in us and in the land. Sending us out to conquer those giants. It is a Kairos moment for overtaking your enemy. What is it that has plagued you? Plagued your family, region, land? It is a moment when we can wage war and have victory in new realms

Joshua 1 is the word for the house – crossing over into a place of inheritance destiny and covenantal promises. We are crossing over to fight.

You are in a time of cross over; a time of victory His possession and His inheritance. The Lord says you are standing on the front lines of spiritual warfare. You are armed with the spirit of truth. You are awakening to a third day anointing to possess the inheritance of God in your lives and in which God will do wonders among you. This is the time to receive the promises given to us and carry the legacy of truth to the generations that will follow. You are stepping into a new place and stepping into a new grace. Do not think that the enemies of God will not try to stop you, for they will. But I have assigned victory to you. And the Captain of the Host to go before you if you will humble yourself before your King. If God be for you, who can be against you? You are in a Kairos moment to take down the giants in your lives and the giant in this land. The Captain of the Host will rise within you to annihilate that which wars against you and against His kingdom.

This is a Kairos moment of increase. You have been given the keys, the keys to unlock transformation, resource and restoration of relationship to this land. You have been given the authority to carry the ark of His Presence. And carry it you shall. There will be an increase in overcoming power, in finance, in revelation and glory. This is a day of beginning again. The past will remain in the past, but the present will rise before you with new clarity of cause. He says you are entering in to a day of greater glory. You are entering in to the doxa of God, the glory that Christ carried. Stepping into a new place of His authority. The kind of glory that commands the attention of those that are about you. The kind of glory that Christ carried; the kind of glory that carries Christ presence, not just His anointing but His nature. The ark of His Presence. Not just the power of Pentecost but the kind of glory that confronts the systems of men with truth; the kind of glory that brings change. The kind of glory that carries His nature; and His nature and His presence will release signs wonders and miracles

This is the kind of glory that release the miracle working power of God. (This is no small thing) dumas power the can do power of God. The kind of power that effectually expands the kingdom in great measure and greater momentum that we have seen in days past.

A clear definition is coming into your lives and into the lives of leadership on their levels of authority and along with that, riding tandem, is the tangible presence and favor of God. He says this will be given unto you as you humble yourself before His throne and rise to His will. We are in a Kairos moment of governmental order rising. The heart of a Shepherd within those who are carrying a mentoring and an awakening transformation. He says you have been called, you have clothed and you have been set in a seat of authority. The army of the Lord is rising within its structure and the ranks and the battalions are forming in this land. He says you have been given the keys to unlock the treasury of God. There is increase upon you and the tent of His presence must be enlarged in you. In your house and in this land. He is enlarging he is increasing.

Greater is He that in you than he that is in this earth. Greater works shall I do than that you have seen in days gone by. Mighty warriors, dressed for battle, holy is your Lord. He is your Commander in Chief. He will lead you to victory as you step out and step in to that place of His provision.

He is going to cause many of you to be expanded in influence. That where you have been ignored or overlooked or almost veiled in the seasons gone by that He is going to reveal His heart through you to others. There is going to be an increase of influence in you. You are going to begin to walk in a new authority even this day

I see a natural increase in the house, people increase, the house getting bigger, more room
the mentoring mantle that is on the house will become stellar; it is to literally become a mentoring platform here that God is going to s says that He is going to cause this to be established and it’s going to have great effect on the generations. He says that this will be a house of legacy and this is a house of legacy that will be passed down to the generations. There is a generational anointing on this house, but they won’t just be raised in the kingdom to know the king, but they will be raised in the kingdom to follow hard after His paths and transform nations from within that seat of authority before the king.

“Mary picked up an alabaster jar filled with nearly a liter of extremely rare and costly perfume—the purest extract of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet. Then she wiped them dry with her long hair. And the fragrance of the costly oil filled the house.“ - John 12:3 TPT

I have to first be honest….this thought did not originate with me. It began when I was listening to a teaching from Damon Thompson. And honestly, it just simply messed me up. I’ve been meditating on it for days.

Read the above verse again. As you probably recall Judas, the one who eventually would betray Jesus, did not take too kindly to this extravagant display of worship. His response is found in verse 5, "What a waste! We could have sold this perfume for a fortune and given the money to the poor!”

As critical and pious as we all like to be, if we were honest, we would have probably felt the exact same way as Judas. Especially if you were one who was poor. Think about it…..if you had a huge need and you saw what could satisfy your need being poured out in front of you, would you be quick to question, like Judas, this over the top devotion of Mary?

The only way to be sure is to answer this question, what is the most valuable thing in the room? If you answered the alabaster box of oil you would be incorrect. You see, Jesus is the most valuable thing in the room. And Mary was the only one who understood that. Everyone else put the most value on the oil, and in doing so, revealed a deep truth within their own hearts. Jesus was not the most valuable to them. He was a priority to them, but He was not their obsession.

Priority is defined as something that is more important than other things and that needs to be done or dealt with first. To obsess is to be the only person or thing that someone thinks or talks about; to excessively preoccupy the mind with.

Mary thought more of Jesus than she did the oil. Everyone else considered the oil first, and in doing so thought it wasteful to pour it out. It’s easy to be extravagant when you see and know Jesus to be more valuable than anything else you may have.

I realized that somehow, slowly, I began to think and act like a betrayer. I was comparing Jesus’ worth to things around me; arguing with myself about what He deserved and whether or not I would give it. The heart of Mary within me had been numbed by pain, disappointment, rejection, and unbelief.

What about you? Have you been walking with Jesus for so long that He has slowly become your priority and is no longer your obsession?
